Apple confirms record iPhone 4 sales

Apple released a statement yesterday claiming it had sold 1.7 million units of its iPhone 4 device by the end of Saturday June 26, three days after its launch. “This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. Earlier analyst estimates had put first day sales alone at 1.5 million, far exceeding previous launches of older models.

In a statement, Jobs recognised the vendor is struggling to keep up with demand: “We apologise to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply.” Last week Apple also admitted that white versions of the device would not be available until the second half of July. The  company moved 600,000 units of the slimmer and better-equipped US$199 iPhone 4 in its first day of pre-sales earlier this month, but this deluge of interest jammed ordering systems and squeezed many operator partners’ inventories.
